Benefits of Sprouting:
Sprouts are very easy to grow, inexpensive, and nutritious. You also get the satisfaction of growing them yourself indoors throughout the year. Sprouts can also be incorporated into a number of delicious recipes, providing ample nutrients and flavor! Also, it’s a great activity for the kids!
How to Sprout:
You will need:
- 1 jar (1 quart – 1 gallon)
- Screen or netting
- 1 Rubber band
- Fresh water
- 1 bowl to prop jar
- 1 – 4 tablespoons of seeds
Sprouting seeds:
- Alfalfa, red clover, radish, fenugreek, lentils, peas, and mung beans
- Less Common: cabbage, sunflower seeds, broccoli, garbanzos, mustard seed, and quinoa
Directions:
Put the seeds in the jar and cover with the mesh netting. Put into place using the rubber band. Add water, swirl, then drain. Next, add 1 cup of cool water and let the mixture soak for 4 – 8 hours.
Rinse the seeds twice daily with cool water. Drain after rinsing and invert the jar propped at an angle against the bowl. In 3 – 6 days the sprouts should be 1 – 2 inches long and ready to be enjoyed! Refrigerate in a closed container until eaten.
